Apparently they've unveiled a new design for the World Trade Center. I have no opinion on the design...a building's a building, after all.

But do they have to call it the "Freedom Tower"?

If they call it the Freedom Tower, the name will either be ignored (like "Avenue of the Americas"), or it'll metamorphose into a place name that has no further significance. Only New Yorkers can be stumped by asking whose statue stands in Columbus Circle. Anyone else will say "Let me guess -- Columbus, right?" But surprisingly often, New Yorkers won't know, because for them "Columbus Circle" is a place name that doesn't refer to anything but itself.

I used to live on Union Street in Brooklyn, a few blocks down from Grand Army Plaza. Quite a few of my neighbors knew when our neighborhood had been built; and of those, most were aware that Grand Army Plaza is a monument to the Civil War. However, I doubt that more than a handful of them ever connected "Union" with historical events. It was just Union Street. Same went for other streets in the area: Garfield, Douglass, President, etc.

Jingoism is no match for our species' short attention span.
