An alternate explanation

I've been pondering the remarkable unity of Republicans, and how they follow Bush even on issues that are clear losers like denying healthcare to children. At first I assumed it was because they all were just unfeeling bastards, but surely their self-preservation instinct should override that on this issue. We are talking about sick children, after all.

Then it dawned on me-- in addition to Republicans being the party of Reagan, they're also the party of Larry Craig, Mark Foley, and Bob Allen (not to mention Ted Haggard and Jeff Gannon). This leads to the only explanation that I think makes sense for why Republicans would continue to slavishly follow the President against all reason. He's promised them all happy endings before he leaves office. That may seem like an awful long time to wait ("Republicans: Our states are red, but our balls are blue?"), but then conservatives are known to be into some pretty freaky stuff...
