Words

Just for the record, I have no idea how I ended up with five copies of the last post, nor do I know why MovableType won't let me delete them.

Wait for the moment of zen

I don't know if any of the material being generated by/for/about the writer's strike is going to ultimately do any good, but it's nice to get a tiny slice of Daily Show.

Guessing games

Cartoon Brew has posted a list of the 12 films submitted for Best Animated Feature Film, with a challenge to guess the three that will be nominated. Here's the list, with my picks in bold:

  • Alvin and the Chipmunks
  • Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
  • Bee Movie
  • Beowulf
  • Meet the Robinsons
  • Persepolis
  • Ratatouille
  • Shrek the Third
  • The Simpsons Movie
  • Surf's Up
  • Tekkonkinkreet
  • TMNT

Of course, I should confess that of the twelve here, The only one I've seen is Ratatouille, so the rest is based on what I've heard from others...

As sucinct a summary as you'll probably find on why the writers are on strike.

Firedoglake - Firedoglake weblog » The Falafel Squad

Firedoglake quotes the following, and then proceeds to poke fun:

Like Hansel and Gretel hoping to follow their bread crumbs out of the forest, the FBI sifted through customer data collected by San Francisco-area grocery stores in 2005 and 2006, hoping that sales records of Middle Eastern food would lead to Iranian terrorists.

I'm not sure what Christy's problem is with this approach, though. I used hunt for date prospects in the frozen foods section of the local Kroger by looking for any women who may have been purchasing chocolate ice cream.

Kung Fu Monkey: Why Strike II

I'm not quite sure what to excerpt, so if you're interested in some details on the WGA strike, just go see what Kung Fu Monkey has to say.

Weird

Like others, I am baffled at what they're doing with the movie version of Beowulf. I saw an ad for it last night, which was the first time I realized that it was a 3D film instead of a true live-action movie. It's Robert Zemeckis, so of course it's not pure animation, it's motion-capture. I don't necessarily have a problem with this, although I think the performances you get from mocap are stilted compared to what you get by turning animators loose. What I don't get, though, is why anyone would take motion capture of Angelina Jolie, and then create a 3D copy of her (which at a glance seems to fall squarely in the dreaded uncanny valley), when they clearly had access to the real thing.
