Around the time they hired Jim C. away, I went up to visit Rich Siegel and the gang at their offices for lunch ... somewhere near Burlington, MA at the time. We talked over big plates of fried Legal Seafood fare.

I know Jim became integral to their efforts; he cut his teeth supporting scriptability in MathWorlds (it was one of the few recordable AppleScript applications early on, thanks to Jeremy's influence). Jim C. applied what he'd learned, and BBEdit became scriptable beyond just responding to a few menu commands.

It's too bad that we never tried to bring scripting to the Java version. There were always other priorities.

To complete the story, he's recently left BareBones, and is somewhere near Seattle.

See. I can't help myself.

the difference between our estimates is about right, though. Too bad we couldn't be wrong in the other direction!

Interesting-- I knew the Barebones guys were in Massachusetts, but I didn't realize there was a UMassD connection. I'll need to point Chandra towards this.

Random: The guy who re-wrote most of BBEdit back in the mid-to-late 90's was one of the original developers of the first, Mac-only version of Jim Kaput's SimCalc MathWorlds when he was a physics grad student at UMass Dartmouth. Jim Correia worked for our project (along with, Jeremy Roschelle and Rich Delaura) and then left physics for a life of professional software development. Easily one of the best and most conscientious programmers I've known.

And I think I just officially became the guy who tells stories nobody is interested in. Well, maybe not *just.* Blerg.

There's definitely a filesystem in there, and I'm sure we'll be able to measure the time between the iPad's release and someone jailbreaking it in days, if not hours. For me the real question is whether the lack of a user-accessible filesystem will have any impact on what users can do with it. I don't find it a big deal on the iPhone, but on a laptop or desktop it would be a dealbreaker. With the iPad lying somewhere between those two, I wonder what the expectations will be.

Well, the kicker is that (to my understanding) there is a filesystem on both platforms. It's just completely hidden. If I'm not mistaken, one of the selling points on jail braking an iPhone is to get at the file system. In theory, you could do the same with the iPad...

Put that inside my stomach and you get an approximation of the effect of politics on my emotional state over the past decade or so.
