Half-way there. This has been professional development week and I am tired. Today we tried a new approach - I think it worked well.
There is some mysterious person calling all over the office at work looking for me but not leaving voice mail or sending email. I hate that - if you want to find me, leave a trail I can track.
Still waiting to hear from Ron Sachs about that bass he's getting in for me to try. I really hope I like it. My bow has now been described as 'not really helping me' - time for a real one, methinks.
Happy birthday, dad!
So, what I do is research and now we are faced with an interesting challenge because we have access to a bunch of data, but we don't know how to frame it or which portion of the data to go after. See, it's all about trade-offs - are we better off letting that data go or trying to capture it with the potential of never using it. If we do collect it, what is the most efficient way to do that? Argh! I suppose this is better than the problem of not having access to data at least.
Today one of the IT students moved out of his office to start his new career. I know that it is the way of things, but for some reason my brain just never gets used to the seemingly short time students come into our space. When I was in grad school 3 years felt like an eternity (well, not quite - but it was definitely long enough - 4 was certainly long enough and 5 was all about getting out....) but now that I am on the "staying" side instead of the fluid side, 3 years doesn't seem long at all. Another student leaves today and one of mine goes (sort of) Friday. It's all very abstract!
On another topic of things my brain doesn't quite know what to do with - slurring on the bass, for me, is bizarrely confusing....
So yesterday, Jason and I were going to Atlanta to look at Resonator guitars and acoustic basses when we saw this Subruban-type vehicle with two full-color Jesus scenes painted on the back doors. Now, this was a bit strange (don't often see scenes painted on vehicles anymore), but it got truly weird when we passed this vehicle and there was a Playboy Bunny sticker on the side of it. Huh?
The sort of bittersweet side to the story is that Jason and I both found instruments (a National Resonator Delphi for Jason and a Ronald Sachs upright bass for me), but we both found instruments that cost 2x what we intend to pay for them - back to shopping for me and saving for Jason.... The good news for me is that Ronald Sachs is going to be receiving their "student line" instruments soon - so maybe I can get a close approximation to the NICE bass for a price I can afford.
